Not the same, but still great!
I owned the Mandarin VHS version of this movie a long time ago and never saw the Cantonese version until now. Dragon Dynasty's version is missing quite a few memorable scenes that the Mandarin version has (1. Jet Li and Chan Chung-Yung's virtuous righteousness "fight", 2. Josephine Siao spitting tea on Sibelle Hu when asked to bring Tai Yuk to the wedding, 3. Josephine Siao’s Tai Yuk: “Be careful, don’t scratch my face” moment, 4. Josephine begging to take Sai Yuk home and accidentally ran into the wall, 5. and some more…). Not sure if the movie was edited and released differently for Mandarin and Cantonese audiences or had a complete makeover for DVD release, but it is very unfortunate that those scenes (they were hilarious!) are not included in the DD version. And frankly, the essence of Chan Chung-Yung's character cannot be reflected in dubbed Cantonese (he is an actor from Taiwan).
However, this is still one of Jet Li's best. The movie completely transformed him from the serious Wong Fei Hung to the comic Fong Sai Yuk. Still want to thank DD for bringing this great movie to an even wider audience.

I thought DD was going to release both Fong Sai Yuk films?
What happened to a re-release of both films, or is the second film just not listed yet
- Michael, Detroit, MI | March 27, 2009
Worth owning
Excellent fight scenes and choreography. Decent comedy scenes. This will definitely be a treat in digitally remastered form.
- Arigo A, TX | March 27, 2009
Sweet! Thank god DD is still around!
I was getting worried there for a moment Bey! We'd all though DD was closing up shop! I am VERY relieved that you are not. I will be picking this up when it comes out.
Don't give up on us Bey! We love Dragon Dynasty and support what your trying to do.

I love this movie, its one of my all time favorites. I saw this when I was 13 on t.v. and never saw it again.
I only saw this film once. But it was so good that it stayed in my memory for years and I have been craving to watch it again.

What Has Happened
Is this it for Dragon Dynasty?...What started as a great label providing Asian Films fully uncut and clearly subtitled, seems to have fallen upon the notion that we deserve the already substandard cuts, just repackaged and dressed nice to anyone who would know no better. I for one am now had it, I let The Enforcer slide as a once off, but now with this release I've lost faith in this label.
- Upset, USA | March 28, 2009
glad this is being released
I thought DD was going to release both Fong Sai Yuk films?
- Michael, Detroit, MI | March 29, 2009
great film but NO CANTONESE 5.1...why?
GREAT movie, one of Jet's best but where's the cantonese 5.1 soundtrack? jeez the same thing happened on Police Story 3 English 5.1 and only flipping mono (MONO for FLIPS sake!!!) even English DTS *ROLLS EYES*. IF anything give us cantonese DTS!
- Jim, London | March 29, 2009
"LEGEND"
This film has to be one of the greatest Hong Kong films ever released. Li portrays a character that you easily fall in love with and performs some of the greatest action sequences to ever be filmed. "The Legend Of Fong Sai-Yuk" has to be one of the greatest Jet Li films ever released.
- Phuong The Ngoc, California | March 30, 2009

Classic Hong Kong jem! Another DD victory!
Finally, the complete, intact version of this Kung-Fu classic w/ the original Cantonese track, in a quality remastered, anamorphic DD edition! Now I can chuck out my crappy all region BS disc!
Eagerly anticipating Pt. 2!!!
- James "pixote" Ramirez, SLC, Utah | April 02, 2009
Classic
This movie is a classic to me. I've seen this movie since a kid and always wanted to watch it again, but no where to be found. Thanks to dragon dynasty for distributing this and hopefully the remaster will look as great as when i was kid. Good story plot, awsome fight scenes, comedy.
- hmong guy, Minnesota | April 02, 2009
Classic from jet and corey yuen
This was one of my favorites when i got it maybe 15 years ago on vhs. finally getting the dvd will rock. Why sooo long between releases?

Yes Jet is a legend
I love this movie and the fights scenes are jaw dropping good.
BEY PLEASE GIVE US THE DRUNKEN MASTER 1& 2, YOUNG MASTER, FEARLESS HYENA AND SNAKE AND CRANE ART OF SHOALIN.
GIVE US SOME VINTAGE JACKIE CHAN IN HIS PRIME.
- JACKIE FAN, BRONX | April 03, 2009
Yet another cut release.
Yet another decade-old VCD that I won't be replacing. Way to squander a whole lot of goodwill among people who, though they ought to have known better than to trust anything affiliated with the Weinstein Company, foolishly gave Dragon Dynasty the benefit of the doubt about righting Dimension's wrongs. What is it that they say about things that are too good to be true? Go ahead and delete this; it doesn't matter in the end.
- Poisonous Word Of Mouth, I am everywhere. | April 03, 2009
Great movies with lots of fun fighting scenes and a funny love story.
If the DVD release is the Dimension transfer with a cCantonese track, it's a no buy for me. Cutting over 10 minutes for no reason is unforgivable. No More Cuts in DD DVDs!
- ericf, Heaven | April 04, 2009
The film is up there as one of the of the all time greates martial arts films of all time.
Bey, you give the best audio commentary on all DD releases. You are the guru of Hong Kong cinema. I just wish this DVD would come out sooner. This is one of Jet Li's best movies ever. I already own a copy but I will buy the special collector's edition because it is worth getting. Bey, do you think you could release "Arahan" on DD? It is a Korean film which has superb fight sequences. I can't find it anywhere. I saw "City of Violence" on DD and it is buy the same director who did "No Blood, No Tears." His name is Ryoo Seung-Wan. Please release it on DVD if you can. I know that you get a barrage of so many requests and demands to release so many Hong Kong movies. But this will definitely be an action junkie's wet dream. Take care and keep kicking Hong Kong ass.
- Scott, Florida | April 05, 2009
One of my favorite Jet Li Hong Kong films!
I had given up on Dragon Dynasty based on "my father is a hero" No original audio track, cut really bad ect.. I hope they don't use dimension cut for this one otherwise I'll be protesting outside Dragon Dynasty headquarters. Also why cantonese mono? Why no remastered audio? F.A.I.L........
- HUNTNGROW, Ann Arbor, Michigan | April 05, 2009

shame there's no chinese 5.1 though

Another Jet Classic gets the Treatment it deserves on dvd.
It's good to see this jet li film classic with extras that every hk film buff loves especially with Almighty Bey's Commentary to add to the excitement of watching this film as if were your first time.

GREAT!!! A MUST OWN!!!
One of the greatest kung-fu movie. From my point of view, the best Jet Li's movie. Don't miss it... and I hope Dragon Dynasty will also release the sequel Fong Sai Yuk 2!!!

- Jet Li fan, PA | April 09, 2009
Very excited by this release
Love this film, and can't wait to replace my HK DVD with Dragon Dynasty's version.
I thought DD was going to be releasing BOTH Fong Sai Yuk films to DVD?
- Ras Michael, Detroit, Michigan | April 11, 2009
I haven't seen this movie, but I give it a 5-star from the description.
I've seen many of these movies for sale, but I only buy them if Dragon Dynasty name is on the cover. So just keep the movies coming.
- Guardian, San Antonio, Tx | April 15, 2009
I'll buy it again
I already have this film on DVD, from its "Jet Li Collection" release. But when Dragon Dynasty remasters it, throws a couple of featurettes on there and, most importantly, when Bey records a commentary, I'm more than willing to drop another 20 bucks on a movie I already have.
The movie itself is full of great action and comedy. Some of Jet Li's best work that never got the recognition it should have in the US.
- Greg, NY | April 16, 2009
mind-blowing classic
i need this to be in mandarin audio though :(
- sean wu, ohio | April 17, 2009
I haven't seen the film yet, so I don't know what to think about the film
is this the same Fong Sai Yuk movie from 2003?
- Mr. Lee, USA | April 18, 2009
I hope...
This is one of my favorite childhood films and I hope this is not the same transfer and cut as the US Dimension release. Hopefully it's a new cleaner transfer and no interviews with Jet Li? Or Josephine Siao Fong-Fong?
- daniel, New York City | April 23, 2009
One of his best
I hope this is the Funnier version. There are two english dubs i have watched and one is funnier than the other. I hope this is the funnier one.

Another great movie out of the Jet Li archive.
Now really outdo yourself and release "The Clan of the White Lotus" or "The Magic Blade".
Thanks.

Great martials arts action/comedy
This movie rocked the house.
Bought it yesterday at Wally World and watched it last night. Dragon Dynasty did a great job on the transfer.
Now if DD would just work their magic on, "The Heroic Ones, The Battle Wizard, The Duel of the Century and Two Champions of Shaolin" I would call that a huge win for martial arts fans.
- Greg, US | May 27, 2009
Fantastic action/comedy
Martial Arts at their finest here.
Bought this at Wally World yesterday and enjoyed my afternoon watching jet Li in one of his better roles. this movie was non-stop action and his mom really was the winner here. Great movie.
Thanks again DD.
Now if you want a nice challenge for 2010 how about working your magic on, "The Heroic Ones, The Battle Wizard, The Duel of the Century and Two Champions of Shaolin?"
- Greg, USA | May 27, 2009
I though it was amazing!
I liked the film. Jet Li performed just as good if not better than he had in a lot of the other martial arts films I'd seen him in. It was choreographed really well too.

Jet Li and Dragon Dynasty at their best
This 5 stars is not only for this film but for Bey Logan and DD. Bey, your love for martial arts cinema comes through with every DD release. I love your commentaries. Please keep DD alive!!

Using the cut international release = BOO!
Very disappointed with this release, too bad DD decided to use the edited international release.
Comparing screen caps with the old Dimentions release also shows that the new print's contrast is way off, and edge enhanced.
- Ras Michael, Detroit, MI | May 30, 2009
awesome
i can't wait to see it. cool cool cool cool cool cool awesome.
- nobody but a fan of jet li, | May 30, 2009
Dragon Dynasty keeps making me buy movies I already have! And I don't mind a bit.
This is not the first film I've purchased from DD, despite already owning a previously released version, and it won't be the last. They're worth buying again for Bey Logan's commentaries alone. Any of you who don't listen to the commentary, you are missing out!
"The Legend of Fong Sai Yuk" is a great movie. It has all of the elements of action, comedy and drama you could possibly ask for out of Hong Kong cinema. Jet Li's American films never seem to show how funny the man can be. This was the first Jet Li movie I ever saw - the one that made me a fan for life.
- Greg, New York (The State, Not The City) | June 01, 2009
Fong Sai-Yuk, the Short Version
The running time of this film is over 10 MINUTES shorter than on previous Asian DVDs. Why are we getting the truncated version? I love Dragon Dynasty, but after the English dubbed (?!?) release of The Enforcer and now this, I've had to chuck two Dragon Dynasty DVDs. Why is this happening???
- Noah, New York | June 03, 2009
An awesome flick!
So few of Jet Li's titles to be remastered such as this one comes as an excitement. I will definitely own every one of them - DD has done such a wonderful job! Keep up the good work!!!
- Liz, Indianapolis, Indiana | June 07, 2009
Don't be fooled, DD broght out the scissors
This one is missing scenes folks...another big disappointment for the Dynasty

Big Jet Li fan
WoW! I've been following Jet Li for years. i still have fong sai-yuk on vhs. Great movie can't get enough of his movies. FONG SAI-YUK first movie i seen with Jet Li
- Dwayne, Beacon, New York | July 20, 2009
Great action movie
Is this a remake of the movie The Legend (Jet Li), which is what I have. It does not say The Legend Of Fong-Sak-Yuk, just says The Legend. Loved the movie.
- Cleveland Kincaid, Springfield, OR USA | September 24, 2009
Cool now you got this one.
This is one flick people should get if your a fan of Jet Li like me. Him and his mom are funny and the fights are awesome, off the hook. DD coming out with all the hot movies, whats next.
- Richard A Nieves, Norwalk, CT | July 27, 2009
awesome
these are great. since these are being remastered, anyway we can see these on blu-ray soon???
- Nick, Montreal (QC) | August 03, 2009
Great film spoiled by many cuts
Good image quality on this DVD version, with good original sound and above average subtitles, but why are so many scenes removed or shortened?
For example:
* At the start one of the blacksmiths gets his face twisted off, but that has been cut on this DVD.
* There's also some other scenes where Fong Sai Yuk helps his mother to curl her hair like the white woman she was looking at earlier in the film (the same one that she got the idea for her blacked-out glasses from).
* After Fong Sai Yuk deliberately loses the fight for Tiger Lu's daughter and the little boy runs to his father saying "Guang Dong Top 10 her loses fight on stage!" we see why he is doing this (Because his father is betting on the fights).
* And after Fong Sai Yuk's mom wins the fight against Li Siu Wan there's a scene missing where Tiger Lu forces her to sign a document saying that she will marry her daughter (which better explains why they have to pack their bags in the next scene.)
There's plenty of other cuts during the film and it's rather disappointing to have such a nice quality transfer but important and cool parts of the film cut.
- Stevee, UK | August 11, 2009
very excellent
The movie was exceptionally funny and fight scenes were awesome, but most of the English subtitles are completely wrong or opposite of what they are saying in the movie. I wish this would have been fixed.
- anon, USA | September 19, 2009
Is the sequel gonna be on dragon dynasty
i just purchased the legend of fong sai yuk and looked some info up on IMDB and there were sequels and i was wondering if dragon dynasty will come out with the sequels. if they do come out, you know where my money will be spent on.

Beautiful
I have been a jet li fan for as long as i can remember, and i have to say this is one of jet's best period. As soon as i get this version, iam disposing of the one i already have (Crappy englsh dubbed verson)
- Maurice B., Rochester,NY | November 07, 2009
Great movie, but still cut down?
This is one of my all-time favorite HK flix and Jet Li movies. As much as I think the movie has never looked or sounded as good as the DD release, I was pretty ticked to discover that you guys edited out 10 or so minutes of the movie for your release, including some of my favorite gags. Guess I'll just have to keep two copies on the shelf. Next time, at least include a deleted scenes special feature if you could.
