Before launching to international fame with The Killer and Hard Boiled,John Woo proved his mastery of action direction with Last Hurrah for Chivalry. Loaded with brilliantly choreographed action sequences that would become Woo’s trademark, this sword fighting saga of honor and loyalty is “a near flawless pic”(Kung Fu Cinema). Two master swordsmen agree to help a desperate man avenge his family’s murder, only to discover that they may be pawns in a larger, more treacherous plot. The twisting story, fascinating characters, and sensational battle scenes combine to make this film an essential martial arts classic.

Way ahead of it's time. Great fight scenes and story!

Even though heavily influenced by the chang cheh flicks I believe John woo had better fight scenes than the shaw bros. flicks and my man green suit is one of the illest characters in a kung fu flick.

One of the Greats

This movie is fantastic. Sure even back then it wasn't groundbreaking but the filming, the colors, the action everything is in place. I've trudged through a lot of the muck old Hong Kong films have to offer, and this is one of the ones that wins even non-fans over. John Woo made this movie then kept remaking its themes until he went to Hollywood were he could never make a movie like he did in Hong Kong.

dynamite

Obviously influenced by Chang cheh which is a good thing. More fluid fight scenes and an attempt at an actual plot. Good character development. Classic!!!!

A glimpse of the genius that is Woo

This movie definitely foreshadows the impact John Woo and his films would have on Hong Kong cinema. The fight scenes are superb and nothing is wasted. Truly a masterpiece from a masterful director.

One of the best of the genre to me.

I saw the biggest influence of this movie in classic westerns. Which influenced many of these almost spaghetti Kung Fu movies. Terrific movie with horrible dub voicing that I still found to be just as entertaining.

Fascinating

The swordplay in this movie is just mesmerizing. This film is just beautiful and fun. I'd say this film is completely worth looking into, on a number of levels. The DVD quality is again very high, and the restoration is beautiful. The subtitles are great, the sound fine, the picture splendid. Definitely one of Dragon Dynasty's more solid releases.

Finally, the Sleeping Swordsman!

Finally, the Sleeping Swordsman! Too bad he didn’t turn over to avoid getting his face burned – and losing in a somewhat disappointing manner. Thoroughly enjoyed from beginning to end; nothing but meat and potatoes, if the meal is good, then dessert isn’t really necessary. I did enjoy the weapons feature and would like to see more of this type of bonus material. This could be expanded to include proper use (training segments) and application of certain weapons across multiple genres released.
